Mangaluru: A CCTV trail and information from police informants have helped Urwa police arrest a 40-year-old man allegedly involved in the theft of a Honda Dio scooter from Kodikal in Mangaluru.

The accused has been identified as Mohammed Faizal alias Thota Faizal, 40, son of the late Ibrahim and a resident of Baitul Kausar, New Thota House, Kodi, Ullal, Mangaluru.

Police arrested Faizal on Tuesday, August 18, and recovered the stolen two-wheeler during the investigation.

Scooter stolen from Kodikal

The case was registered at Urwa police station on July 24, 2026, following a complaint regarding the theft of a Honda Dio scooter bearing registration number KA-19-EB-2226.

The scooter had reportedly been parked in front of a house at Kodikal when it was stolen.

Following the complaint, Urwa police launched an investigation to identify the person responsible for the theft and trace the missing vehicle.

CCTV footage provides vital clues

As part of the investigation, police examined CCTV footage recorded by cameras installed in and around the area.

The footage reportedly helped investigators trace the suspect’s movements following the theft. Police were able to identify his appearance and follow the route taken after the scooter was allegedly stolen.

CCTV surveillance has increasingly become an important investigative tool in vehicle theft cases, particularly when suspects move through areas covered by multiple cameras.

In this case, the footage provided investigators with crucial leads and helped narrow down the search for the accused.

Informants help establish identity

Along with the CCTV trail, Urwa police also relied on information gathered from their network of informants.

The information reportedly helped investigators establish the identity and whereabouts of the suspect. Police subsequently traced Faizal and located the stolen Honda Dio.

After confirming the leads gathered during the investigation, police arrested the accused on August 18.

The recovery of the stolen two-wheeler has further strengthened the investigation into the alleged theft.

Police uncover extensive criminal record

During the course of the investigation, police reportedly found that the accused has a much longer criminal history.

According to police, more than 40 cases have been registered against Faizal at various police stations in Karnataka and Kerala.

Police also found that arrest warrants were pending against him in cases registered at several police stations.

These include police stations in North Mangaluru, Konaje, Ullal, Moodbidri, Bantwal Rural and Manipal.

The details have emerged as part of the investigation following his arrest in the Kodikal scooter theft case.

Case registered under BNS

The case has been registered under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, relating to theft.

The police are continuing their investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the scooter theft and determine whether the accused’s alleged involvement in other cases is connected to the current investigation.

The pending warrants in other cases are also expected to be dealt with according to the applicable legal procedure.

Investigation continues

The arrest follows a combination of technological surveillance and traditional police intelligence gathering.

The CCTV footage provided investigators with a trail, while information from police informants reportedly helped them identify and locate the suspect. The subsequent recovery of the Honda Dio brought an important development in the case.

Police are continuing further investigation into the matter. Details of the accused’s alleged involvement in the other cases and the action to be taken in connection with the pending warrants are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
