Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta sharply criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government, accusing it of undermining harmony and showing hostility towards Hindu traditions. He expressed strong disapproval over the recent incident during the Common Entrance Test (CET), where a student’s janivara (sacred thread) was allegedly removed during security checks.
Chowta stated that the removal of the sacred thread, especially for students who dedicated months to preparing for the exam, was not only humiliating but also an affront to the Brahmin community and Hindu beliefs. “This isn’t just a thread—it represents wisdom, discipline, and a sacred rite of passage. Disregarding this tradition shows a lack of respect for Hindu sentiments,” he said.
He accused the Siddaramaiah administration of using exam protocols as a pretext for actions that reflect deep-rooted bias, calling the incident a deliberate assault on religious customs. The MP also criticized the Congress government for other moves he sees as divisive, such as the 4% reservation in government tenders for Muslims and alleged partiality in caste-based surveys.
Chowta demanded a public apology from the state government and justice for the affected student. He called the series of such actions “deeply communal and discriminatory.”
Echoing the sentiment, Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath also demanded an official apology and strict measures against the officials involved, urging the state to ensure that such events are not repeated.
