In a spiritually profound and reverent ceremony, the Diocese of Mangalore celebrated the Chrism Mass on Thursday, April 10, at Rosario Cathedral, led by Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha. The liturgy brought together hundreds of faithful, clergy, religious sisters, and lay leaders from across the diocese.

Often described as the diocese’s largest pre-Holy Week gathering, the Chrism Mass embodied unity and sacred purpose. Bishop Saldanha opened the celebration by reflecting on the Church’s communal identity, stating, “This Mass reveals the true image of the Universal and local Church—the bishop with his priests, and the faithful, united in worship and mission.”

A Day of Spiritual Preparation
Before the Mass, diocesan priests engaged in a day of pastoral dialogue, spiritual reflection, confession, and Eucharistic adoration. Fr Dominic Vas, OCD, delivered a moving meditation on synodality and priestly life.

A Homily Rooted in Priesthood and Anointing
In his homily, Bishop Saldanha described the priest as the face of God, bearer of the Word, and healer through sacramental grace. He emphasized the faithful’s shared baptismal mission, urging all to recognize their spiritual anointing and live out their vocation with integrity.

Rituals of Renewal and Blessing
The clergy renewed their priestly promises, reaffirming their dedication. The bishop then blessed the Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens, and Sacred Chrism, essential for sacraments throughout the year.

This solemn celebration powerfully reaffirmed the Diocese’s commitment to faith, unity, and mission during the sacred Paschal journey.
