Mangaluru: The recently inaugurated district administrative complex, ‘Praja Saudha,’ in Alape, Mangaluru, may represent administrative progress, but its surrounding areas are battling a host of persistent civic issues.

Located next to the Bengaluru–Mangaluru NH-73 and close to Mangaluru Junction railway station, Alape South Ward suffers from inadequate infrastructure.

Underpass Brings New Headache

The much-awaited underpass on Bajal–Padil Road was intended to ease traffic caused by railway gate closures. However, it now floods during rain, needing frequent water pumping—a problem mirrored on the NH in front of Praja Saudha.

Road Hazards & Drainage Nightmares

Juma Masjid Road, widened and concretised, lacks footpaths and proper stormwater drains, turning dangerous during monsoons. At Jalligudde, rainwater rushes onto steep roads, threatening two-wheeler riders.

The stormwater drain between Alape South and Kankanady-B wards is clogged with silt, causing overflow near Pakkaladka. Locals urge permanent solutions like widening and concreting the drain.

Transport & Infrastructure Demands

Residents demand an extension of private bus services from Jappinamogaru to Padil (1.5 km more) for easier access to Praja Saudha. Meanwhile, a 300m pothole-ridden stretch in Vijayanagara, though flanked by concrete roads, awaits attention from the city corporation.

STP Concerns & Internal Road Development

Though odour from the local sewage treatment plant has reduced, untreated water continues to flow into fields, according to residents. Most internal roads have been upgraded, thanks to Rs 20+ crore in funding, except Bollada Road and parts pending due to land disputes.

Poor Quality Construction Questioned

The road connecting Bajal Pakkaladka to Kanekar, redone just months ago, has already crumbled under the weight of a lorry. Locals are demanding accountability for substandard concrete work.
