Puttur: A 26-year-old Community Health Officer who had allegedly attempted suicide after reportedly expressing her unwillingness to marry a man chosen by her family has died after battling for life for 27 days at a private hospital in Mangaluru.
The deceased has been identified as Pragnya (26), daughter of late Heggadesh Gowda and a resident of Mittadka in Bettampady village. She was working as a Community Health Officer under the jurisdiction of the Badagannur Gram Panchayat.
Allegedly consumed tablets at home
According to police, Pragnya allegedly consumed tablets at her residence on June 21 in an attempt to end her life. Preliminary information suggests she had reportedly expressed her unwillingness to marry a prospective groom chosen by her family.
Family members rushed her to a private hospital in Mangaluru soon after the incident, where she was admitted in critical condition. She remained under intensive medical care for nearly four weeks as doctors made sustained efforts to save her life.
Despite continuous treatment, her condition did not improve, and she succumbed on Friday, 27 days after the incident.
Police register case
Following her death, the Sampya Police Station registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police are examining all aspects of the case, including statements from family members and others acquainted with the deceased, to establish the sequence of events that led to the alleged suicide attempt.
Officials said the investigation is ongoing, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
Tragic loss
Pragnya’s death has left her family, colleagues and residents of the locality in grief. As a Community Health Officer, she was involved in providing primary healthcare services within the Badagannur Gram Panchayat area and was known for her public service.
The incident has once again highlighted the emotional pressures that individuals may face in matters related to marriage and personal life. Police have urged the public not to speculate about the case while the investigation is in progress.
