Puttur: A complaint has been registered at the Puttur Town Police Station against Dr Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, president of the Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha, accusing him of delivering a hate speech during a Vivekananda Jayanti programme. The complaint alleges that the speech contained provocative and communal remarks and was delivered in the presence of students, parents and minors.
The complaint was filed by the Manava Bandhutva Vedike, which has demanded the immediate arrest of Dr Bhat and legal action against a YouTube channel that allegedly broadcast the speech. According to the organisation, the incident occurred on January 12 during a Vivekananda Jayanti event held on the campus of a private college, where the programme was also livestreamed online.
Allegations of incitement and communal hatred
The complainants alleged that Dr Prabhakar Bhat, who presided over the event, made statements that incited hatred and violence against members of the Muslim and Christian communities. They claimed that the remarks were inflammatory in nature and capable of disturbing communal harmony.
According to the complaint, the speech not only affected those physically present at the venue but also reached a wider audience through online platforms. The Manava Bandhutva Vedike stated that students and minors, who were among the audience, were particularly vulnerable to such messaging, making the alleged offence more serious.
Activists alleged that the content of the speech spread fear and hatred and could lead to social unrest if not addressed promptly. They maintained that public figures holding influential positions must exercise restraint and responsibility while addressing gatherings, especially those involving young audiences.
Violation of court restrictions alleged
The complainants further alleged that Dr Bhat violated court-imposed restrictions that prohibit him from delivering hate speeches. They stated that despite previous legal directions, he allegedly continued to make divisive remarks, thereby showing disregard for the law.
By repeating such statements, Dr Bhat is accused of promoting communal enmity and encouraging violence in society. The organisation claimed that the alleged speech amounted to a serious offence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and other applicable laws dealing with hate speech and communal provocation.
The Manava Bandhutva Vedike asserted that strict legal action was necessary to uphold the rule of law and prevent the normalisation of hate speech in public forums.
Demand for action against online platforms
In addition to action against Dr Bhat, the complainants also sought legal proceedings against the YouTube channel that allegedly aired the speech. They argued that broadcasting such content further amplified the impact of the remarks and contributed to the spread of communal hatred beyond the immediate audience.
The organisation urged authorities to examine the role of digital platforms in disseminating inflammatory content and to take steps to ensure accountability for those who publish or promote such material.
Complaint submitted in presence of activists
The complaint was submitted by Ramachandra K., taluk committee president of the Manava Bandhutva Vedike Karnataka. He urged the police to register the case promptly and initiate strict action in accordance with the law.
Several activists and community representatives were present at the police station at the time of filing the complaint, expressing solidarity with the demand for legal accountability. They stated that hate speech posed a serious threat to social harmony and constitutional values.
Conclusion
The police have acknowledged receipt of the complaint and are expected to examine the allegations, including the content of the speech and the alleged violation of court orders. Further action is likely after a preliminary inquiry. The case has once again brought attention to concerns over hate speech at public events and the responsibility of organisers, speakers and digital platforms in maintaining communal harmony.
