Uppinangady: A complaint has been lodged with the Uppinangady police alleging that a 16-year-old girl from Nelyadi village was subjected to an attempted act of harassment while she was travelling out of her village earlier this week. The incident has caused concern among local residents and highlighted the continued need for stronger measures to ensure the safety of minors, especially girls, in rural areas.

According to the complaint, the accused has been identified as Chandrashekhar, a local resident. The case was formally registered on January 6, 2026, following a written complaint submitted by the girl’s father, who approached the police after learning about the alleged incident.

Incident reportedly occurred during festival visit

Police sources stated that the incident allegedly took place when the girl had gone out of Nelyadi village to attend a local festival. While she was travelling, the accused is said to have attempted to harass her, causing distress and fear.

The exact nature of the alleged harassment has not been disclosed in detail by the police, as the victim is a minor and the investigation is at a preliminary stage. Officials said necessary care is being taken to protect the identity and privacy of the girl, in accordance with legal provisions.

Father approaches police seeking action

The girl’s father, in his complaint, stated that his daughter informed him about the incident after returning home. Concerned about her safety and mental well-being, he decided to lodge a formal complaint with the Uppinangady police.

“He wanted immediate action so that such incidents do not recur and no other child is subjected to similar behaviour,” a police officer familiar with the case said. The complaint reportedly urged the authorities to take strict action against the accused to serve as a deterrent.

Case registered, investigation under way

Based on the complaint, the Uppinangady police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Officials confirmed that statements are being recorded and relevant information is being collected to ascertain the sequence of events.

Police are also verifying the background of the accused and whether there have been any previous complaints against him. “We are taking the matter seriously, as it involves a minor. All procedures will be followed as per the law,” an investigating officer said.

Legal provisions likely to be invoked

Though police have not yet officially confirmed the sections under which the case has been registered, sources indicated that provisions related to harassment and offences against minors may be applied based on the findings of the investigation. If sufficient evidence is found, stricter sections could be added at a later stage.

Legal experts note that cases involving minors are dealt with stringent norms, and the police are required to complete the investigation promptly while ensuring the child’s rights and dignity are protected.

Concern among local residents

The incident has led to concern among residents of Nelyadi and nearby villages. Several locals expressed worry over the safety of girls, especially during festivals and public gatherings, where crowds and travel increase.

Community members have urged parents to remain vigilant and have also appealed to authorities to strengthen patrolling during festivals and events. “Such incidents should not be ignored. Early action can prevent more serious crimes,” said a resident of Nelyadi.

Importance of reporting incidents

Police officials reiterated the importance of reporting any form of harassment, particularly when it involves minors. They said timely complaints help law enforcement take preventive steps and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals.

Authorities also encouraged parents and guardians to educate children about personal safety and to inform elders or the police immediately if they face any uncomfortable or threatening situations.

Awaiting further developments

As of Tuesday evening, no arrest had been officially confirmed, and the investigation was ongoing. Police said further details would emerge once statements from witnesses are recorded and evidence is examined.

The case serves as a reminder of the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding children and ensuring that public spaces remain safe for everyone, especially young girls.
