Puttur, May 31: Construction work on widening NH 75 at Parakkala in Rekya village came to an abrupt halt when a wooden plank with iron rods collapsed under the weight of poured concrete on Wednesday.
The ongoing project involves constructing a new bridge across a trench at Parakkala as part of the four-lane Addahole-B C Road NH work. Although pillar work had been completed, iron rods were fixed onto wooden planks in preparation for concrete pouring. However, on the evening of May 29, as concrete was being poured onto the structure using a machine, it collapsed under the load.
Currently, work on the bridge has been suspended. Fortunately, since the concrete was being poured by a machine, there have been no reports of injuries or loss of life. Locals have pointed out that the beams beneath the wooden planks were not properly erected.
Interestingly, the same company has recently constructed a new bridge nearby, which has been in operation for several days now, with vehicles traversing it regularly.
