The Dakshina Kannada District Committee of CPI(M) has raised serious allegations against the Mangaluru Commissionerate Police, accusing them of deliberately covering up the mob lynching incident that occurred in Kudupu. According to CPI(M), the FIR registered in the case serves as evidence of the alleged cover-up.
The incident, which took place at Samrat Ground, Kudupu on April 27 around 3 PM, involved a mob reportedly lynching an unidentified person. Within an hour, the Vamanjoor Police Station was informed, and by 5 PM, officers arrived at the scene where they found the victim’s body with brutal injuries. However, the CPI(M) claims that the police were already aware of the full details by this time, and the Commissioner had also been informed.
CPI(M) leaders suggest that key accused individuals, Ravindra Nayak and Manjunath, who are said to have ties to local BJP leaders, influenced the police’s decision to suppress the case. Allegedly, the police, fearing national backlash and reputational damage, chose to weaken the investigation.
The cover-up, according to the CPI(M), included making Manjunath, one of the primary accused, file a report of an “unidentified body,” which led to the registration of an Unnatural Death Report (UDR). Despite clear signs of lynching, the police downplayed the injuries as “minor scratches.” The police reportedly delayed action for over 32 hours, only registering an FIR after media attention and public pressure.
The second FIR, filed by Keshav, an associate of the alleged communal gang involved, described the victim shouting “Pakistan Zindabad,” fueling claims of a communal motive. CPI(M) has called for a high-level investigation into the police’s handling of the case, demanding the formation of an impartial Special Investigation Team (SIT) and disciplinary actions against the officers involved.
