Mangaluru– The Dakshina Kannada unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has announced a public protest on June 23 at the Clock Tower, calling for concrete action to counter the escalating communal tensions in the district.

Muneer Katipalla, district secretary of CPM, stated that the party is demanding the filing of a new FIR and a reinvestigation into the mob lynching of Ashraf, a Kerala resident, in Kudupu. The CPM is also pressing for financial compensation to families affected by communal violence.

He stressed the need for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe all communal murders and revenge killings from the past decade, citing the lack of justice in numerous cases. “The region is gripped by unrest. Hate crimes, polarisation, and retaliatory killings are tearing apart the social fabric,” Katipalla remarked.

According to him, normalcy has become a distant dream in the coastal belt. “Divisive forces are gaining strength. Hate speeches, criminal acts, and communal crimes are increasing. People’s livelihoods, employment, and businesses are suffering,” he said, urging citizens to unite for harmony.

He criticised the selective handling of recent murder cases, pointing out that only Suhas Shetty’s murder was handed over to the NIA, while cases involving Mohammad Shareef, Ashraf, and Abdul Rahiman are still not fully investigated.

Katipalla concluded by urging the government to hold those inciting hatred accountable and provide relief to the affected families.
