In a determined effort to enforce the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) – 2003, the district tobacco control squad teamed up with Barkur police and personnel from Mangaluru City Corporation to conduct a targeted operation. The raids took place at Sai Bin complex in Lalbagh and the Ballalbagh locality, focusing on individuals smoking in prohibited areas and shopkeepers flouting regulations.

Acting on instructions from District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. H.R. Timmayya, the campaign was spearheaded by District Surveillance Officer Dr. Naveen Chandra Kulal. Their rigorous enforcement led to 92 cases being filed against violators, including public smokers and errant shop owners. Offenders received warnings and monetary penalties for breaching the law.

The operation showcased the teamwork of ASI Sudhakar and health officials Deepika, Pundalik Lakati, and Shruti Salian, reflecting the district’s commitment to promoting healthier environments. These efforts underline a zero-tolerance policy towards tobacco use in public spaces, safeguarding community well-being.

This initiative reinforces the district’s resolve to curtail health risks associated with smoking and secondhand smoke exposure, fostering cleaner and safer surroundings for residents.

Mangaluru’s proactive stance is a reminder of the shared responsibility to comply with public health laws, paving the way for a smoke-free future.
