Mangaluru played host to a landmark gathering of communicators and leaders at The Avatar Hotel Convention Centre from May 16 to 18, as part of the Toastmasters District 121 Annual Conference – Crescendo100@Kudla.
The conference was inaugurated on Friday, May 16, at 4:30 PM against the vibrant cultural backdrop of coastal Karnataka. Organised by Toastmasters clubs from Mangaluru and surrounding towns, the three-day event marked the centenary year of Toastmasters International and drew over 425 delegates from clubs across Karnataka and Kerala.
The event promised — and delivered — a dynamic blend of inspirational keynotes, speech contests, workshops, cultural showcases, and networking sessions, all celebrating excellence in public speaking and leadership.
Inspiring Keynotes
The highlight of the inaugural day was a powerful keynote by Dananjaya Hettiarachchi, 2014 World Champion of Public Speaking. Drawing from his journey, he spoke on the themes of preparation, character, and perseverance:
“Before you become a world champion, you must be a champion off-stage,” he declared, emphasizing that the stage magnifies both strengths and flaws. He urged participants to take risks, commit deeply to their goals, and build the endurance needed for long-term success.
Pawas Chandra, International Director for Region 13 (India and Southeast Asia), served as Guest of Honour. He reflected on Toastmasters’ core values — integrity, respect, service, and excellence:
“If you want to go higher, you must be willing to go deeper,” he said, inviting members to examine their motivations and values.
Celebration of Excellence
District Director Savita Salian, the conference’s chief host, lauded the organising team for creating a platform that blended learning with community:
“This conference brings together the energy of many, fostering both personal and collective growth.”
The opening ceremony featured a flag march, national anthem, and lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Conference Chair Amith Ananda welcomed delegates with a unique Yakshagana-themed address, while Co-Chair Pandiarajan R. extended formal greetings.
The occasion also included:
-
Release of the official conference souvenir
-
Felicitation of 13 Distinguished Toastmasters
-
Recognition of 60 veteran members for decades of active service
Cultural Vibrance
Clubs from across the district showcased their talent through cultural performances that reflected the region’s diversity and enthusiasm. The evening was seamlessly anchored by Niranjana (VR Advanced Toastmasters, Bengaluru) and Anju Ann Thomas (Allianz Services Toastmasters, Trivandrum).
All District Officers, including M. N. Pai (Finance Manager), Dr. Sophia Zacharias (Area Director), and Dr. C. K. Ballal (Sponsorship Chair), were present along with several dignitaries and guests.
