Mangaluru: A cyber fraud case has been reported after unidentified fraudsters allegedly hacked a man’s mobile phone and siphoned off nearly ₹6.91 lakh from multiple bank accounts through unauthorised online transactions. The victim later noticed several SMS alerts regarding money transfers and subsequently approached authorities after discovering suspicious activity in his bank accounts.

According to the complaint filed by the 54-year-old victim, he recently observed multiple SMS notifications on his mobile phone relating to money transfers. On checking his bank accounts through the mobile application, he discovered that money had been transferred without his consent or knowledge.

The victim immediately contacted the 1930 Cyber Helpline and reported the unauthorised transactions.

Multiple UPI transactions detected

Further investigation into the bank records revealed that a substantial amount had been transferred from different accounts through UPI transactions.

After obtaining the statement of his account at the Kavoor branch, it was found that on May 3, an amount of ₹3,76,620.88 had been transferred through multiple UPI transactions.

Subsequent verification of statements from two additional accounts maintained at the Kulur branch revealed that another ₹3,14,914 had also been transferred on the same day through similar online transactions.

The complainant stated that these unauthorised transactions had also been reported to the Cyber Helpline for immediate intervention.

Total loss crosses ₹6.91 lakh

The total amount siphoned off in the alleged fraud was calculated at ₹6,91,534.88.

According to the complaint lodged with Kavoor police, unidentified fraudsters allegedly sent suspicious messages to the victim’s mobile phone, gained unauthorised access to the device and later transferred money to different bank accounts through online transactions.

Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway to trace the accused and determine the exact method used in the cyber fraud.

Cyber experts repeatedly advise the public to avoid clicking unknown links, installing unverified applications or sharing sensitive banking information, as such tactics are commonly used by fraudsters to gain access to devices and financial accounts.
