Mangaluru: A controversy surrounding the performance of daiva nartana (Nema) in Bolur has taken a fresh turn, with members of the Pambada community asserting that the performer at the centre of the issue is a Hindu and not a Christian, as previously alleged.
The clarification came during a press conference addressed in Mangaluru, where community representatives refuted earlier claims regarding the identity of the performer and defended the sanctity of the ritual.
Allegations spark controversy
The issue emerged following statements made by Dr. Rati during a media interaction on March 13. She had alleged that traditional daiva nartana practices—customarily performed by around 16 designated communities, including Pambada and Panara—had been violated.
According to the allegation, a youth said to be born to a Christian mother had performed rituals at the Jarandaya Daivasthana, raising concerns over adherence to customary norms.
However, these claims have now been strongly refuted by members of the community.
Community refutes claims
Responding to the allegations, daiva performer Sooraj Chipparu firmly denied the claims. He stated that the community possesses valid caste and identity documents confirming that the performer, Sushanth Bangera, belongs to the Hindu Pambada community.
Chipparu emphasised that all procedures and traditions associated with the ritual were duly followed, and there was no violation of customary practices.
He further addressed concerns regarding the performer’s family background, clarifying that while Sushanth’s mother was originally from a Christian background, she had adopted Hindu customs after marriage.
Family background explained
Providing further details, Ganesh Pambada stated that he had married as per Hindu traditions and that his wife had embraced the same faith and customs thereafter.
“When a person adopts another faith and follows its traditions, they become part of that community. It is unfair to target individuals on this basis,” he said.
Ganesh added that his son, Sushanth Bangera, was raised in accordance with Hindu traditions and has obtained all necessary legal documents, including caste certificates, as per existing laws.
Ritual conducted as per tradition
Community members also asserted that the daiva nartana performed at Jarandaya Daivasthana in Bolur was conducted with full devotion and in line with traditional practices.
Ganesh Pambada, who has over 31 years of experience performing daiva nartana across regions such as Kumble, Vitla, Koliyoor, Manjeshwar, Kurnadu, and Harekal-Pavoor, stated that there was no disrespect to the ritual or its sanctity.
He reiterated his commitment to upholding the dignity and traditions of the community and continuing to perform wherever invited by devotees.
Performer expresses distress
Meanwhile, Sushanth Bangera expressed concern over the allegations, stating that being labelled otherwise had caused him distress and could impact his future as a performer.
He urged those who made the claims to issue a public apology, adding that such statements have affected his reputation within the community and beyond.
Wider participation and response
Several community members and leaders, including Ganesh Kaje, Kamalaksha Pambada Gandhakadu, and Savita, were present at the press conference, extending their support and reiterating the community’s stance.
The issue has sparked broader discussions around tradition, identity, and adherence to customary practices in ritual performances across the coastal belt.
Conclusion
The Bolur daiva nartana controversy highlights the sensitivities surrounding cultural traditions and identity in coastal Karnataka. With the community presenting documentation and clarifications, the matter has taken a new direction, though discussions are likely to continue.
Authorities and community leaders may need to engage further to ensure clarity and prevent similar disputes in the future, while preserving the integrity of longstanding traditions.
