Mangaluru: The excise department in Dakshina Kannada has intensified its crackdown on excise-related violations, registering 31 major cases and seizing assets worth ₹9.31 crore between July 2024 and January 2025, according to the deputy commissioner of excise.
As part of its enforcement operations, the department confiscated 876.780 litres of alcohol, including 115.350 litres of Goa liquor, 47.250 litres of defence liquor, 140.940 litres of illicit liquor, 56.570 litres of beer, 244.920 litres of wine, 115 litres of toddy, 92 litres of jaggery wash, and 64.750 litres of illicitly distilled alcohol. Four vehicles were also seized during the operation.
To ensure compliance, the department has been issuing temporary CL-5 licenses for serving alcohol at weddings, meetings, and events after thorough verification. Additionally, officials have been discreetly monitoring such gatherings in plain clothes to prevent unauthorized liquor distribution without disturbing the public.
The supply of illicit Goa and defence liquor has been significantly curtailed through these measures. During the 2023-24 fiscal year, 432 temporary permits were issued between April 2023 and January 15, 2024. For the same period in the current fiscal year, the number has risen to 865, reflecting increased vigilance and streamlined permit processes.
The department’s rigorous approach underscores its commitment to reducing illegal liquor activities and ensuring public safety.
