Mangalore: Torrential rains have inflicted a significant blow on Dakshina Kannada district, causing losses estimated at ₹167.73 crore. To manage the aftermath, ₹14.22 crore has been allocated from the District Disaster Relief Fund, with an additional ₹4.14 crore earmarked for affected taluks.

District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundurao revealed these figures at a press conference after surveying the impacted areas. The calamity has tragically claimed 11 lives and injured nine people. It has also resulted in the complete destruction of 154 houses and partial damage to 484 others, along with the death of 18 animals.

Extensive road damage, impacting various infrastructure sectors including Panchayat Raj and public utility roads, has been recorded. The property losses, including damage to transformers and poles managed by Mescong, are estimated at ₹10.14 crore.

In response, care centres have been set up in Mangalore, Ullala, and Kadaba taluks, providing shelter to 234 affected individuals. The state government is also working on compensation for damaged horticulture crops, which affected approximately seven hectares.

Minister Gundurao stressed the importance of environmental conservation and forest preservation in preventing such disasters. While refraining from detailed comments on developmental projects and their impact on Western Ghats’ ecology, he reaffirmed the focus on immediate relief measures and ongoing damage assessments.
