In a major step towards eradicating tuberculosis (TB), Dakshina Kannada launched a 100-day TB elimination campaign at Wenlock District Hospital. Dr. H R Thimmaiah, District Health Officer (DHO), highlighted that India accounts for a quarter of the global TB cases, with widespread transmission linked to poverty, lack of treatment, delayed testing, and misconceptions.
The campaign aims to make Dakshina Kannada TB-free by the end of 2025, with active efforts focused on grassroots detection and community participation. Dr. D S Shivaprakash, Superintendent of Wenlock Hospital, emphasized the need for collaboration between private hospitals and government facilities, as many patients seek private treatment before reaching government hospitals in advanced stages.
Udupi district’s MP Kota Shrinivas Poojary also stressed the importance of inter-departmental coordination and community involvement in the fight against TB. The campaign will include screening camps at the Gram Panchayat level to provide treatment and raise awareness about the disease.
