Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District NSUI president Suhan Alva has urged St Agnes College and Canara College in Mangaluru to reconsider and postpone examinations scheduled during the Dasara festival, citing students’ desire to participate in the celebrations.
Alva said Mangaluru Dasara is a major cultural and religious event in coastal Karnataka, and many students look forward to taking part in the festivities. He appealed to the college administrations to consider students’ sentiments while making decisions about examination schedules.
He said postponing the examinations would allow students to participate in the celebrations without having to choose between academic commitments and festival activities.
NSUI criticises ABVP protest
Reacting to a protest staged by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists over the examination schedule, Alva said staging an abrupt protest was not the appropriate way to address students’ concerns.
He maintained that student organisations should first engage with college administrations through discussions and seek an amicable solution before resorting to protests.
Alva stressed that dialogue and consultation were essential when addressing issues affecting students. He said disagreements over examination schedules should be resolved through constructive engagement between students and college authorities.
Appeal for a student-friendly decision
Alva urged the managements of St Agnes College and Canara College to consult students before taking a final decision on the examinations.
He said the colleges should strike a balance between students’ academic responsibilities and their desire to participate in the Dasara celebrations. A mutually acceptable decision, he added, would help prevent confusion and unnecessary inconvenience among students.
The NSUI district president reiterated his appeal for the examinations to be postponed, urging the institutions to consider the concerns raised by students and arrive at a solution that serves their interests.
