Mangaluru: The Karnataka government has invited public suggestions and objections on its proposal to rename Dakshina Kannada district as Mangaluru district. Residents and other interested members of the public can submit their feedback until October 30, 2026.

The move follows an announcement by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar after a State Cabinet meeting held in Mangaluru on September 18. The government has now issued an official notification seeking public opinion before proceeding further with the proposed name change.

Government issues official notification

According to the notification, the government has received representations from politicians, social thinkers, senior citizens representing different religious communities and various organisations seeking a change in the district’s name.

The proposal is being considered in view of public demand and administrative convenience. The Revenue Department issued the notification on October 1, inviting objections and suggestions before a final decision is taken.

The proposed change would replace the name Dakshina Kannada with Mangaluru district. However, the renaming has not yet been finalised, and the government is seeking public feedback as part of the process.

Where to submit suggestions and objections

Members of the public can send their views in writing or by email to any of the following offices before the October 30 deadline.

1. Chief Minister’s Secretariat

Room No. 235, Second Floor, Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru – 560001

Email: [email protected]

2. Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue Department

Room No. 711, Seventh Floor, Multi-Storey Building, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Veedhi, Bengaluru – 560001

Email: [email protected]

3. Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada district

Praja Soudha, Dakshina Kannada District Administrative Centre, Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Padil, Mangaluru – 575007

Email: [email protected]

The government has asked interested individuals and organisations to submit their views within the stipulated period so that the representations can be considered.

Final decision awaits public feedback

The proposed renaming has been discussed in the region for several years. Supporters have argued that the name Mangaluru is widely recognised and reflects the region’s identity, while the current proposal gives the public an opportunity to formally express support, concerns or objections.

The government will consider the feedback received before deciding on the next steps. Until the process is completed and a final decision is announced, the district continues to be officially known as Dakshina Kannada.

Residents wishing to participate in the consultation should ensure their submissions reach one of the designated offices before October 30, 2026.
