Mangalore: The cable chamber located in the middle of K.S. Rao Road near the Hampankatte signal, close to Jose Alukkas, has become a hazard for motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders. Several accidents have already been reported, with riders frequently losing control after hitting the edge of the chamber, which has sunk below the road level. In one recent incident, a pregnant woman fell and was rushed to the hospital by local residents. According to locals, at least one person a day suffers injuries due to this poorly maintained road feature.
The cable chamber is constructed of concrete slabs with iron frames, but the concrete has risen and broken in certain areas, exposing the iron rods beneath. This poses a significant risk for two-wheelers, as their wheels can get caught, leading to sudden skidding and accidents. Local shop owners report that vehicles coming from Hampankatte, especially those speeding along the road, often get stuck in the chamber, causing accidents.
Complicating the situation further, vehicles coming from the city centre take U-turns near this chamber, increasing the risk of accidents as two-wheeler wheels may get trapped on the uneven edge of the concrete slab. Similar cable chambers in poor condition are scattered throughout Mangalore, emitting alarming sounds of collapsing whenever vehicles pass over them.
Local residents have raised concerns and are urging officials and representatives to address the issue promptly. They are demanding repairs to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow along this busy road.
