Three individuals have been booked by city police in connection with the death of a migrant laborer at a construction site in Balmatta, Mangaluru. City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal confirmed that building contractor Venugopal, a supervisor, and another person are facing charges under various sections of the BNS Act. Venugopal has been taken into custody for interrogation.

The deceased, Chandan Kumar, aged 30, lost his life in a tragic mudslide incident at the construction site. In response, the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (KBOCWWB) swiftly approved an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to Kumar’s family. The decision was recommended by the labor officer in Mangaluru on humanitarian grounds.

Furthermore, the Building Construction Contractors Association has announced an additional ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to support Kumar’s family during this difficult time.

The incident underscores the precarious conditions often faced by migrant workers on construction sites and highlights the legal and humanitarian responses required in such situations.
