Mangaluru: In a major step towards declaring Dakshina Kannada as Karnataka’s first completely literate district, the Zilla Panchayat has launched a district-wide Google survey to identify illiterate residents.
Zilla Panchayat CEO Anandh K urged every citizen to participate in the campaign by scanning the QR code and submitting the required details before the deadline of June 10. “This is a crucial initiative. Citizens must report if there are any illiterates in their households. It is a collective responsibility,” he said.
Clarifying the intent of the initiative, he noted that the survey’s only goal is to count the number of illiterates accurately—there’s no need for concern or confusion. Those already enrolled or undergoing training through literacy programmes need not be included in the list.
“If anyone wants to learn, we’ll make the necessary educational arrangements. Even if they cannot join learning programmes, the data must still be submitted,” he added.
The form requires detailed information, including:
-
Name and address of the illiterate person
Age, gender, Aadhaar number
Contact number, caste, occupation
Whether the person is differently-abled
Name of nearby school
Taluk, village/town/municipality
Names of parents
The district must cross the 95% literacy threshold to be declared fully literate as per official guidelines. For queries, citizens can contact the District Adult Education Officer’s office at 0824-2451233.
