Mangaluru: In view of the intensifying monsoon and growing safety concerns, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H V has directed all urban local bodies and gram panchayats in the district to immediately remove dangerous and unauthorised flexes, banners and buntings installed along roads, especially on road dividers.

The directive comes amid heavy rainfall and strong winds being experienced across the district. The district administration has expressed concern that such installations could become dislodged during adverse weather conditions, posing a serious threat to motorists, pedestrians and public property.

Monsoon raises safety concerns

According to the deputy commissioner, strong winds and heavy rain associated with the monsoon season could cause flexes, banners and buntings erected on roadsides and dividers to come loose and fall onto vehicles or passers-by. Such incidents could potentially result in accidents, injuries and even loss of life.

The district administration has reportedly received several complaints from members of the public regarding the presence of unauthorised flexes and banners at various locations across the district.

Considering the risks involved, authorities have been instructed to act without delay and remove all hazardous and unauthorised installations from public spaces.

Local bodies directed to act immediately

Darshan H V has instructed all municipal bodies and gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada to undertake immediate preventive measures and ensure strict compliance with the order.

The deputy commissioner emphasised that local authorities must identify and remove unauthorised advertisements, flex boards, banners and buntings that have been erected without permission, particularly those located in areas vulnerable to strong winds.

The move is aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring public safety during the ongoing monsoon season.

Legal action against violators

The deputy commissioner also warned that penalties and legal action may be initiated against individuals, organisations or agencies responsible for installing unauthorised advertisements in public places.

Authorities have been asked to monitor violations and take appropriate action under the relevant laws and regulations governing public advertising and road safety.

The administration believes stricter enforcement will help discourage the practice of erecting unauthorised flexes and banners that obstruct public spaces and create hazards during extreme weather conditions.

Officials warned of accountability

Issuing a stern warning, Darshan H V stated that any negligence or delay in implementing the order would not be tolerated.

He said that if any accident occurs due to the failure to remove dangerous installations, the concerned officials would be held directly responsible. In such cases, disciplinary action would be initiated against them in accordance with government rules.

The district administration has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and reducing risks associated with monsoon-related incidents across Dakshina Kannada.
