Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. has directed officials to implement stringent measures against illegal slaughter of camels and cattle, unauthorised transportation of animals, and unlawful meat sales in the district ahead of the Bakrid festival. The directions were issued during a district-level committee meeting held at the Mangaluru City Corporation office hall to review preventive measures and ensure strict enforcement of existing regulations.

Focus on preventing illegal transport and slaughter

Chairing the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. emphasised the need for officials to take proactive steps to prevent violations related to animal transportation and slaughter activities during the festival period.

He stated that prior approval from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is mandatory for the transportation of cattle. Officials were instructed to intensify surveillance and strengthen inspections at all check-posts across the district to curb illegal transportation of animals.

The administration has initiated these measures as part of efforts to ensure that transportation and related activities take place within the framework of existing legal provisions and regulatory requirements.

Mandatory document verification for transport vehicles

The Deputy Commissioner instructed authorities to carry out detailed verification of all documents associated with cattle transportation.

According to the directions issued during the meeting, vehicles transporting cattle must possess complete and valid documentation. This includes transport permits, ownership details of the animals, information regarding buyers, vehicle registration documents and details of drivers operating the vehicles.

Officials have been asked to ensure that no vehicle carrying animals is allowed to proceed without proper scrutiny of the required documents.

The move aims to strengthen monitoring systems and identify cases of unauthorised transportation at an early stage.

Action against illegal slaughter activities

During the meeting, Darshan H.V. also directed officials to take legal action against unlawful slaughter activities in the district.

He stated that any premises found involved in illegal slaughter activities should be seized in accordance with provisions of the law. Authorities have been asked to remain vigilant and conduct inspections wherever necessary to identify violations.

The district administration highlighted that enforcement actions should be carried out in coordination with all relevant departments to ensure effective implementation.

District-level committee asked to ensure coordination

The Deputy Commissioner noted that a district-level committee has already been constituted to prevent illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle.

Committee members were instructed to take suitable action while maintaining coordination among departments and agencies involved in enforcement activities. Officials were also asked to ensure timely communication and information-sharing to facilitate effective implementation of preventive measures.

The administration believes that coordinated efforts among different departments will strengthen monitoring mechanisms and help address violations more efficiently.

Officials attend review meeting

The review meeting was attended by Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Ashok K.R., Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar and other officials concerned with the implementation of preventive measures.

With Bakrid approaching, the district administration has indicated that monitoring activities and enforcement efforts will continue in the coming days to ensure compliance with existing regulations and legal provisions.
