Dr. Naveen Salins, a distinguished specialist in palliative care from Manipal Academy of Higher Education, has been honored with the prestigious alumni award during the December graduation ceremonies at Lancaster University, UK. A 2021 PhD graduate in Palliative Care, Dr. Salins has become a leading figure in advancing palliative and end-of-life care both in India and internationally.

Currently serving as the senior consultant, professor, and head of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, and as associate dean for research, Dr. Salins has led numerous initiatives to revolutionize palliative care across the Indian subcontinent. His leadership was especially crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic, when he pioneered a groundbreaking initiative to address the reluctance to withdraw futile treatments due to legal concerns.

Under his guidance, a national survey in India helped establish several additional palliative care services, significantly improving access to vital care. His work has notably impacted healthcare policies and service delivery, benefiting countless lives.

Dr. Salins has contributed more than 125 peer-reviewed publications and 50 clinical research projects. He has earned numerous prestigious awards, including the European Association for Palliative Care Clinical Impact Award and the Asia Pacific Cynthia Goh Award. He is also a commissioner for the Lancet Commission on Human Crisis of Cancer.

Lancaster University Chancellor, Rt Hon Alan Milburn, presented the award, recognizing Dr. Salins for his extraordinary professional achievements and dedication to global health improvement in palliative care.
