Mangaluru: Dr Shivani U has successfully earned her doctorate from Nitte (Deemed to be University), following the successful defense of her PhD thesis on May 8. Her research was conducted under the mentorship of Dr Prashanth Shetty, who formerly served as professor and coordinator at the KSHEMA Centre for Genetic Services, K S Hegde Medical Academy. He currently teaches at Srinivas Institute of Allied Health Sciences.

Dr Shivani’s dissertation, titled “A Study to Determine the Clinical, Haematological, Cytogenetic and Molecular Profile in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Patients,” offers a comprehensive analysis of CML. Her study explores the diagnostic and prognostic importance of cytokine levels, survivin gene expression, and chromosomal changes associated with disease progression.

Her doctoral advisory panel consisted of Dr Reshma A Shetty, assistant professor at KSHEMA’s Centre for Genetic Services; Dr Vijith Shetty, professor in the department of oncology at KSHEMA; and Dr Suchetha Kumari N, professor of biochemistry at the same institution.

A native of Mangaluru, Dr Shivani is the daughter of Bhanukala Uday and Uday Kumar. She is set to receive her PhD degree during the upcoming university convocation.

Her work adds valuable insight to the understanding of CML, highlighting the potential of molecular and cytogenetic markers in advancing treatment strategies and patient care.
