Bantwal: An eight-month pregnant cow was rescued after it accidentally fell into an open well without a protective compound wall at Kuddupadavu in Kepu village on Friday. The animal was saved following a joint operation involving local residents, social workers and a veterinary team.
Cow fell into well while grazing
The cow belonged to Sadananda Shetty and had been left for grazing near the house of Kasim at Kuddupadavu when the incident occurred. While grazing in the area, the animal reportedly slipped and fell into the open well, causing concern among local residents.
On noticing the incident, villagers immediately rushed to the spot and initiated efforts to rescue the animal. As the cow was eight months pregnant, residents feared for the safety of both the animal and its unborn calf.
Rescue operation launched
Members of the Friends Vitla team, led by Muralidhar, reached the spot and initially attempted to lift the cow out of the well using available equipment. However, the rescue operation proved challenging due to the depth of the well and the condition of the animal.
Realising that additional assistance was required, the team arranged for a crane to be brought to the site. With the help of the crane and the coordinated efforts of local residents and volunteers, the cow was safely lifted out of the well.
The rescue operation drew appreciation from villagers, who praised the team’s quick response and determination in saving the animal.
Veterinary team provides treatment
Following the rescue, a veterinary team immediately attended to the cow and provided first aid. Veterinary emergency doctor Dr Sunil Bantwal, driver Jayaganesh and Adyanadka veterinary inspector Lakshman Saravu examined the animal and ensured that it had not sustained serious injuries.
The timely medical attention helped stabilise the cow, and officials said the animal was recovering after the ordeal.
Residents expressed relief that the pregnant cow escaped without major injuries despite the potentially dangerous incident.
