Mangaluru: An alleged extortion attempt targeting a well-known livestock owner was reported from Angara Gudde village within the limits of Mulki police station, bringing to the fore strong communal harmony as residents across communities rallied behind the victim’s family. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, involved three persons who are accused of attempting to extort money from Abubakar, a livestock rearer whose buffaloes recently won prizes at a Kambala competition.
According to preliminary information available with the police, the accused are said to have arrived from a neighbouring village and confronted Abubakar, demanding money. When the demand was allegedly resisted, the situation escalated into a physical altercation. During the incident, Shamshuddin, Abubakar’s father, was reportedly assaulted by the accused.
Police sources said Abubakar intervened immediately on seeing his father being attacked and managed to rescue him from the assailants. The incident caused tension in the area for a brief period, but timely intervention by local residents helped prevent the situation from worsening.
Alleged extortion attempt and assault
Abubakar is known in the region for rearing buffaloes, milch cows, and oxen, and his success in recent Kambala competitions had brought him recognition. Investigators are examining whether his growing prominence and perceived financial standing played a role in the alleged extortion attempt.
According to the complaint submitted to the police, the accused allegedly threatened Abubakar and demanded money, claiming it was owed to them. When the demand was questioned, they are said to have turned aggressive. Shamshuddin, who was present at the spot, was allegedly assaulted during the confrontation.
Local sources stated that the assault on the elderly man angered residents, many of whom rushed to the scene after hearing about the incident. Abubakar’s timely intervention is believed to have prevented more serious injuries to his father.
Villagers show solidarity across communities
One of the notable aspects of the incident was the response from the local community. Residents of Angara Gudde village, comprising both Hindu and Muslim families who have lived together harmoniously for years, came out openly in support of Abubakar and his family.
Neighbours, including members of the Hindu community, accompanied Abubakar and his family to the Mulki police station, where a formal complaint was submitted. Locals said their collective action was intended to send a clear message that attempts at intimidation or extortion would not be tolerated, regardless of the identity of the perpetrators or victims.
Community elders emphasised that the village has a long history of communal harmony and mutual support, and they were determined to ensure that the incident did not disrupt peace in the area.
Police action and investigation
Mulki police have secured two of the three accused in connection with the case, while efforts are ongoing to trace the third accused, who is currently absconding. Police officials said a case will be registered based on the complaint lodged by Abubakar’s family, and further sections may be added as the investigation progresses.
It has also come to light that one of the accused later approached a hospital seeking medico-legal certification, claiming that he was a victim in the incident. However, police said that video footage of the altercation has surfaced, which provides greater clarity on the sequence of events.
“Videography of the incident is available, and we are carefully examining all the footage before arriving at conclusions,” a senior police officer said. “Based on the evidence, appropriate legal action will be taken against those responsible.”
Criminal background of accused
During the preliminary inquiry, police reportedly found that two of the accused have previous criminal cases of a serious nature registered against them. While officials refrained from divulging specific details at this stage, they confirmed that the criminal history of the accused would be taken into account during the investigation.
Police sources indicated that the involvement of persons with prior criminal records reinforces the need for a thorough probe to determine whether the alleged extortion attempt was part of a broader pattern of intimidation or unlawful activity in the region.
Video evidence under scrutiny
Officials said more facts are likely to emerge once all available video footage is examined. The videos, reportedly recorded by bystanders, are expected to play a crucial role in establishing the roles of each individual involved in the incident.
Police have appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified versions of the incident on social media and to cooperate with the investigation by sharing any relevant evidence with the authorities.
Conclusion
The alleged extortion attempt in Angara Gudde has not only triggered a police investigation but also highlighted the strength of communal unity in the village. As the Mulki police proceed with the case and analyse video evidence, residents hope that swift and fair action will deter similar incidents in the future. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and collective support in maintaining peace and lawfulness at the local level.
