Mangaluru: In view of rising passenger demand, Southern Railway has announced the temporary addition of extra coaches to the Rameswaram–Mangaluru Central Weekly Express. The move aims to accommodate increased travel demand during the peak season and enhance passenger convenience.
According to a release from the Palakkad Division, two additional 3-tier AC coaches will be attached to the train, significantly increasing the number of reserved berths available for passengers travelling on this route.
Additional coaches to operate for limited period
The temporary augmentation will come into effect from April 4 to May 2 for services departing from Mangaluru. For trains originating from Rameswaram, the revised coach composition will be applicable from April 5 to May 3.
Railway authorities have stated that the decision was taken after observing a surge in passenger bookings, particularly during the summer travel period when demand for long-distance trains tends to rise.
Revised train composition announced
With the addition of the extra coaches, the weekly express will operate with a revised composition designed to cater to different categories of passengers.
The updated configuration will include two 2-tier AC coaches and eight 3-tier AC coaches, reflecting a focus on improving availability in air-conditioned classes. In addition, the train will continue to have six sleeper class coaches and four general second class coaches.
Supporting infrastructure will include a second class luggage-cum-brake van and a generator car to ensure uninterrupted power supply for onboard facilities.
Move to ease peak season travel
Railway officials indicated that the augmentation is part of ongoing efforts to manage seasonal travel demand efficiently. Summer months typically witness higher passenger volumes due to school holidays, family travel, and pilgrimages, especially on routes connecting key destinations.
The Rameswaram–Mangaluru route is particularly significant as it connects coastal Karnataka with an important pilgrimage centre, making it a preferred option for a wide range of travellers.
By increasing capacity, the railways aim to reduce waitlists, improve ticket availability, and provide a more comfortable travel experience.
Passenger convenience in focus
The addition of more AC coaches is expected to benefit passengers seeking better comfort during long journeys, especially in hot weather conditions. It also reflects a broader trend of Indian Railways enhancing premium travel options in response to changing passenger preferences.
Authorities have advised passengers to check updated train compositions and availability while booking tickets, as the temporary changes may impact seat allocation.
Conclusion
The temporary augmentation of coaches on the Rameswaram–Mangaluru Central Weekly Express is a timely step to address increased travel demand. With improved capacity and enhanced comfort options, the move is expected to ease congestion and provide a smoother journey for passengers during the busy travel season.
