Mangaluru: The Department of Ophthalmology, in collaboration with the Department of Anatomy at Father Muller Medical College, under the aegis of SKOS, successfully organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme titled “Oculoplasty 360: From Blocks to Botox” at the AV Hall of the institution on June 7, 2026.

The academic programme brought together ophthalmologists, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, postgraduate students, and delegates from various institutions for a day of expert lectures, panel discussions, and cadaveric surgical demonstrations focusing on oculoplasty and ophthalmic anaesthesia.
Experts discuss advances in ophthalmic anaesthesia
The scientific sessions commenced with a lecture by Dr. Jaichandran V. V., Senior Consultant Anaesthesiologist at Sankara Nethralaya, on the topic “Ophthalmic Anaesthesia: Foundations to Advances.”

The session explored developments in anaesthetic techniques used in eye surgeries and highlighted advancements aimed at improving patient safety and surgical outcomes.
The inaugural ceremony followed with dignitaries being escorted to the dais by Dr. Sarita R. J. Lobo, Organising Chairperson and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, and Dr. Dilon Denis Noronha, Assistant Professor and Organising Secretary.
Dignitaries emphasise academic collaboration
The programme was presided over by Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions.

Other dignitaries present included Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Santhumayor, Administrator of Father Muller Medical College, and Dr. Antony Sylvan Dsouza, Dean of the institution.
Dr. Sarita R. J. Lobo welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of academic collaboration, continuing education, and advanced surgical training in the evolving field of oculoplasty.
The chief guest and guest speaker were introduced by Dr. Sripathi Kamath, Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology.
The inaugural programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Dilon Denis Noronha.
Lectures focus on surgical techniques and innovations
Guest speaker Dr. Faraz Ali Mohammad, Consultant Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon and Ocular Oncologist, delivered two specialised lectures on achieving success in dacryocystorhinostomy procedures and the correction of eyelid malpositions.
The CME also featured presentations by eminent faculty members including Dr. Aravind L. Rao, Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery; Dr. Sunayana Bhat, Professor of Ophthalmology; and Dr. Prajna Shetty, Assistant Professor of Dermatology.
The sessions covered a broad range of topics including eyelid disorders, lacrimal surgeries, orbital procedures, reconstructive flaps and grafts, and the therapeutic applications of Botox in ophthalmology.
Faculty members from various medical colleges in Mangaluru moderated the discussions and interactive sessions.
Cadaveric workshop enhances practical learning
A major highlight of the programme was the post-lunch cadaveric workshop designed for postgraduate students.
The hands-on session provided participants with practical exposure to surgical techniques and was moderated by Dr. Sunayana Bhat, Dr. May D’Souza, and Dr. Dane Chandy.
Additionally, a specialised training session on regional blocks for ophthalmic surgeries was conducted by Dr. Jaichandran V. V., offering valuable practical insights into anaesthetic procedures.
The workshop added significant experiential learning opportunities and was highly appreciated by participants.
Delegates praise academic quality of programme
The CME witnessed enthusiastic participation from delegates and postgraduate students from across the region.
Participants commended the programme for its academic depth, practical relevance, and excellent organisation.
The event was recognised by the Karnataka Medical Council, and delegates attending the programme were awarded two credit points.
Organisers noted that the CME successfully achieved its objective of promoting advanced learning, skill development, and interdisciplinary collaboration in the fields of oculoplasty and ophthalmic care.
