Mangaluru: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit and the Student Nurses’ Association (SNA) of Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay, in collaboration with Pudu Gram Panchayat, organised a cleaning drive and awareness programme on June 6, 2026, in observance of World Environment Day.
The initiative aimed to promote environmental conservation, sanitation, and sustainable living practices among community members and students.
Cleaning drive conducted in Punchame and Farangipete
The programme commenced with a cleanliness drive from 8.30 am to 10 am in and around Punchame and Farangipete.
Students and faculty members actively participated in cleaning public areas while simultaneously spreading awareness about environmental protection and the importance of maintaining clean surroundings.
The activity sought to encourage community participation in creating a healthier and more sustainable environment.
Awareness programme held at Ammemar school
Following the cleaning drive, an environmental awareness programme was conducted from 10.30 am to 11.30 am at Government Higher Primary School.
The programme began with a prayer song followed by the formal welcome of dignitaries and participants.
Several speakers addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of environmental conservation and public involvement in maintaining cleanliness.
Former Zilla Panchayat Member Mr. Umar Farooq spoke about the concept of international cleanliness standards and stressed the need to cultivate cleanliness habits within communities.

Pudu Gram Panchayat President Mr. Ramlan appreciated the collaborative initiative and assured support for future programmes promoting cleanliness, reduced plastic usage, and environmental sustainability.
Speakers encourage sustainable practices
Rev. Fr. Rohan Michael Dias, Administrator of Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay, thanked the participants for their cooperation and emphasised the need to protect Mother Earth through responsible environmental practices.
He also assured continued institutional support for similar awareness and community outreach initiatives.
Mrs. Silviya Nisha Lobo, Nursing Superintendent, encouraged participants to adopt environmentally friendly habits such as using reusable jute bags, reducing plastic consumption, and participating in tree plantation drives.
Their messages reinforced the significance of individual responsibility in protecting the environment.
Students spread awareness through role play
As part of the programme, students presented an awareness session through role play, educating community members on environmental conservation and sustainable lifestyle practices.

The creative presentation effectively conveyed the importance of reducing pollution, managing waste responsibly, and preserving natural resources for future generations.
The programme was attended by Grama Panchayat President Mr. Ramlan, Administrator Rev. Fr. Rohan Michael Dias, Former Zilla Panchayat Member Mr. Umar Farooq, Grama Panchayat Vice President Mrs. Ruksana Banu, School President Mr. Jubir, Panchayat Members Mrs. Saramma, Mr. Athik, and Mrs. Nabeesa, Headmistress Mrs. Sharadha K., Principal Dr. Reena Wilma Frank, Nursing Superintendent Mrs. Silviya Nisha Lobo, and NSS Coordinator and SNA Advisor Dr. Edveena Philip Monis.
A total of 80 participants, including members of the Youth Cleanliness Team of Ammemar, faculty and students of Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay, teaching staff and students of the school, and community members, took part in the programme.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks and the singing of the National Anthem, marking the successful completion of the World Environment Day observance.
