Mangaluru– “Reporting without bravery holds no value,” remarked Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy while addressing a gathering at the Press Club. He was speaking at an event organised by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association, where senior journalist Vijay Kotian was honoured with the Brand Mangaluru Award.
Courage Fuels Truth
Drawing inspiration from Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, Reddy said boldness naturally follows sincere intent. “If a journalist is truly committed to honesty, there’s nothing to fear,” he asserted.
Power of Media in Healing Societies
Recalling Rwanda’s post-genocide recovery, Reddy emphasized the media’s role in rebuilding communication and trust between communities. “Radio became a tool for healing, showcasing positive stories that united people and paved the way for justice,” he said.
Accuracy Over Speed
Urging journalists to prioritise truth over urgency, Reddy warned against the rush to publish unverified information. He stressed, “Being fast is not as important as being right. And neutrality shouldn’t mean equating the guilty with the victim.”
Ethical Journalism, a Moral Duty
Reddy encouraged journalists to write with empathy and conscience. “If your words are rooted in truth and integrity, no challenge can shake you,” he noted. He called for journalism that shines light in dark corners, helping society rise above injustice.
Upholding the Press Mission
He concluded by saying that the road to peace is often paved by the courageous work of fearless reporters. “When peace prevails, let it be remembered that journalism made it possible,” he added.
