Mangaluru: The condition of the Urva Fish Market has deteriorated, with no proper internal drainage system in place. Stagnant wastewater and rotting fish waste have turned the premises into a hub of stench and unhygienic conditions.

Vendors, customers, and fishermen who visit the market daily are increasingly frustrated. Foul odour and dirty water make it difficult for them to carry on with business or shopping. The overflow of waste and lack of cleanliness is now a regular complaint.

Though concerns have been repeatedly raised with the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), no visible steps have been taken to address the issue. Civic officials and corporators, despite being informed, have not responded with action, locals say.

“In such a busy public place, the lack of drainage maintenance is unacceptable,” said a customer. Vendors are also facing financial losses, as customers avoid the area due to poor hygiene.

Previously, corporation members and officials from the health department had promised improvements. However, the market remains in the same neglected state. Slippery floors, clogged waste, and unbearable smell have become daily challenges.

Residents and traders are demanding immediate intervention, including proper cleaning, waste disposal, and fixing the drainage network. Many warn that if MCC fails to act soon, they will escalate the matter through protests or legal routes.

The community insists that basic hygiene and sanitation in public markets is not a luxury—but a necessity.
