Bantwal: Four persons were taken into custody by Vittal police for allegedly organising a cockfight involving betting at a government site in Peruvai village on October 2.

Acting on information received by Vittal police station Sub-Inspector Ramakrishna about a cockfight being conducted with money allegedly placed as bets, the police team visited the location and confirmed the activity.

The police subsequently conducted a raid at the site and took four persons into custody.

Four persons taken into custody

The persons taken into custody have been identified as Krishappa, 59, Lakshmana Naik, 38, Shobith Raj, 29, and Yuvaraj, 46.

During the raid, police seized the chickens present at the location along with Rs 3,050 in cash, which was allegedly being used for betting on the cockfight.

Knives allegedly used in connection with the cockfight were also seized during the operation.

The action followed information received by the Vittal police regarding the alleged betting activity at the government site in Peruvai village.

Case registered under multiple sections

A case has been registered at Vittal police station under Crime No. 203/2026.

The case has been booked under Sections 87 and 93 of the Karnataka Police Act. Police have also invoked Sections 3, 11(1)(m)(ii) and 11(1)(n) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Section 112 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, has also been included in the case.

The provisions invoked cover the alleged unlawful betting activity and offences relating to the treatment and use of animals, according to the police case.

Police investigation underway

Following the raid, the seized items have been taken into police custody as part of the investigation.

Police are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged cockfight, the betting activity and the involvement of the persons taken into custody.

The case concerns an alleged offence, and the allegations against the accused remain subject to the outcome of the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.

The police action comes after information was received about a cockfight being organised at the government site in Peruvai. Vittal police have initiated further proceedings under the sections included in Crime No. 203/2026.
