Mangaluru: The Government PU College at Nayanadu in Belthangady taluk, established 14 years ago, has been closed for the past two years due to declining admissions. The college, built under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) of NABARD, remains unused and non-functional since the Department of PU Education decided to shut it down in 2022.
Located on the border of Bantwal and Belthangady taluks, the college initially benefited students from both regions when it opened in 2009-10. The building comprises six rooms, including four classrooms, a staff room, and the principal’s chamber. Initially, with only two lecturers, local donors stepped in to appoint guest lecturers. Additionally, the college received midday meals from a nearby government school.
Deputy Director of PU Education, C.D. Jayanna, explained that the closure was due to a lack of new admissions, as reported by the college principal. Jayanna noted that two government PU colleges, Nayanadu and Harihara-Pallathadka, were closed two years ago for the same reason. The department is currently exploring the possibilities of reopening these colleges.
Regarding admissions to I PU in government colleges this year, Jayanna mentioned that there are 55 government PU colleges in the district, and the respective principals are yet to submit the admission details.
