Mangaluru: Government PU colleges in Dakshina Kannada district are grappling with low admission rates this academic year due to various factors. Challenges include multiple SSLC exams, delays in hostel allocations, and complications with document transfers from other districts. For instance, Government PU College, Balmatta, situated in the heart of the city, has received only 380 admissions out of a total intake of 500 so far.

Principal Vanitha Devadiga attributed the low admissions to candidates from outside the district who are yet to return after completing SSLC exams and delays in availing government hostel facilities. While colleges in city headquarters and prominent areas have managed satisfactory admissions, those in rural areas are struggling, with some yet to cross 50% of admissions.

Principal Shridhar HG of Government PU College in Vamadapadavu explained that the admission process is hampered by delays in necessary document issuance from aspirants’ high school offices and delays in obtaining income certificates.

Yusuf Vittal, principal of Government PU College in B Muda, Bantwal, noted that many SSLC candidates opt for ITI and vocational training courses instead of PUC, impacting admissions to government colleges.

Colleges have observed high demand for science courses, followed by commerce, while arts courses have fewer takers. This, coupled with the abundance of government colleges offering arts courses, contributes to low admissions in the arts stream.
