Mangaluru: The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Mangaluru have appealed to the public for assistance in identifying an unidentified man who was found dead aboard the Matsyagandha Express after the train arrived at Mangaluru Central Railway Station earlier this month.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are attempting to trace the identity of the deceased through personal belongings recovered from him.
Body found in train coach
According to the GRP, the incident came to light on July 18 when Train No. 12619 Matsyagandha Express reached Platform No. 4 at Mangaluru Central Railway Station.
An unconscious man was found inside the DS coach of the train.
After Station Master Akash Kumar Meena alerted the authorities, the railway medical team examined the man and declared him dead.
Following the incident, the Government Railway Police registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR No. 19/2026) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and initiated an investigation.
Description of the deceased
Police said the deceased appeared to be around 45 years of age.
He was approximately 4.5 feet tall, had a medium build, a round face, a broad forehead, short black-and-grey hair and a moustache.
Investigators also noted that both his legs had been amputated below the knees.
He had a tattoo on his right arm bearing the inscription “POOJ YR ANIL.”
At the time he was found, he was wearing a cement-coloured jersey, a checked shirt, a black T-shirt, blue trousers and black Bermuda shorts.
Notebook may provide clues
During the investigation, police recovered a small notebook from the deceased.
The notebook contained handwritten entries mentioning “Anil Maruti,” “Kolkata,” “Mumbai,” “Malad East,” and “Jamrushi Nagar.”
Investigators believe these details could provide important leads in establishing the identity of the deceased or locating his family members.
The police are verifying the information while appealing to members of the public to come forward if they recognise the description or the details found in the notebook.
Public asked to assist investigation
The Government Railway Police have requested anyone with information about the deceased or his relatives to contact the Mangaluru Railway Police.
Officials said even small pieces of information could help identify the deceased and enable the authorities to inform his family.
The investigation is continuing, and the police have urged the public to cooperate in the identification process.
