Moodbidri: A severe head-on collision between a private bus and a car was reported near Beluvai Kantavara Cross on the Karkala-Moodbidri National Highway on Thursday, May 28. The impact of the crash left both vehicles extensively damaged and once again brought attention to the traffic issues caused by the sudden closure of a key U-turn near the junction.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the accident occurred amid heavy confusion among motorists after authorities abruptly blocked the U-turn near Kantavara Cross from Wednesday onwards. The restriction was reportedly imposed without prior public notice, leading to disruptions in the regular movement of vehicles on the busy highway stretch.
The private bus and the car collided head-on near the junction, causing major damage to the front portions of both vehicles. Though detailed information regarding injuries or casualties was not immediately available, the accident created panic among commuters and resulted in temporary traffic congestion on the route.
Sudden closure creates traffic confusion
The closure specifically affects vehicles travelling from the Kantavara side towards Moodbidri. Motorists heading to Beluvai town are now unable to take the earlier U-turn at the junction and are instead being forced to continue travelling up to Chilimbi before making a turn and returning towards their destination.
Daily commuters said the unexpected change in traffic movement has led to confusion, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with the revised route. Several motorists were reportedly seen making sudden turns or stopping abruptly near the blocked junction due to the lack of proper signboards and traffic guidance.
Residents alleged that no advance warning, public notice or alternative traffic arrangement was provided before implementing the closure. They claimed the absence of proper planning has significantly increased the risk of accidents on the highway stretch.
Locals blame unplanned road restriction
The latest collision has intensified public anger in the area, with many residents blaming the unregulated road closure for the growing number of accidents near Kantavara Cross. Locals stated that the traffic diversion has disrupted the smooth flow of vehicles and created confusion during peak hours.
Residents pointed out that the highway stretch already witnesses heavy movement of buses, goods vehicles and private cars throughout the day. They said forcing motorists to travel additional distance for a U-turn not only wastes time and fuel but also increases the possibility of rash driving and dangerous overtaking.
Several local commuters demanded immediate intervention from the authorities to restore the earlier traffic system or introduce a safer alternative arrangement. They also urged officials to install clear traffic signs and deploy personnel to regulate movement until the issue is resolved.
Demand for immediate corrective measures
The accident has once again highlighted concerns regarding traffic management and road safety on the Karkala-Moodbidri National Highway. Residents have appealed to highway authorities and local administration to review the sudden closure decision and prevent further mishaps in the area.
Locals warned that if immediate corrective measures are not taken, more accidents could occur due to confusion among drivers and the lack of proper traffic regulation. They stressed that road modifications affecting public movement should only be implemented after adequate planning, public awareness and safety assessments.
Authorities are expected to examine the traffic situation near Kantavara Cross following growing public criticism and repeated complaints from commuters using the route daily.
