Mangaluru: The southwest monsoon intensified across Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday, bringing widespread and substantial rainfall that disrupted normal life in several areas. Heavy showers lashed Mangaluru city until the afternoon, resulting in waterlogging on multiple roads and causing inconvenience to commuters. The increased rainfall activity marked a strong start to the monsoon season in the coastal belt of Karnataka, with authorities closely monitoring weather conditions and issuing advisories to ensure public safety.
Heavy rainfall causes localised damage
The continuous downpour led to a few rain-related incidents across the district. Near Kadri Park, a compound wall collapsed due to the heavy rain, causing minor damage to a parked car. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
In Bantwal taluk, another compound wall collapsed in Kokkapuni of Bolanthur village. The falling structure damaged a cattle shed belonging to Hamza, a local resident. The incident highlighted the vulnerability of ageing structures during periods of intense rainfall.
Several parts of the district witnessed varying intensities of rainfall. Beltangady taluk received steady and heavy rain throughout the day, while moderate showers were reported from Puttur, Sullia, Kadaba and Subrahmanya. The widespread rainfall replenished water sources and brought cooler temperatures across the region.
IMD issues orange alert for coastal districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Karnataka’s coastal districts from June 7 to June 9, warning of continued heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. The weather department has forecast favourable conditions for sustained monsoon activity during this period.
According to the IMD forecast, a yellow alert will remain in force from June 10 to June 12, indicating the likelihood of moderate rainfall and isolated weather-related disturbances. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The weather conditions significantly impacted temperatures in the district. Mangaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 23.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday, providing relief from the recent humid and warm conditions.
Udupi receives widespread showers
Neighbouring Udupi district also experienced substantial rainfall throughout Saturday. Intermittent showers were reported across the district, with widespread rain recorded in Karkala, Hebri, Byndoor, Kundapur and Udupi taluks.
The rainfall brought welcome relief from the sweltering heat that had affected residents over the past few weeks. Agricultural communities, in particular, welcomed the rain as it improved soil moisture levels ahead of the cultivation season.
Road users exercised caution due to slippery conditions and reduced visibility caused by the showers. Local authorities remained alert to address any weather-related emergencies that might arise during the ongoing monsoon spell.
Administration issues safety advisory
In view of the IMD forecast predicting heavy rain and strong winds over the coming days, the Udupi district administration has issued a strict advisory for residents and visitors. The administration has prohibited people and tourists from venturing near sea shores and riverbanks during the monsoon season.
Officials warned that rough sea conditions and rising water levels could pose serious risks to public safety. The advisory aims to prevent accidents and ensure that residents avoid unnecessary exposure to dangerous weather conditions.
Tourism operators and local authorities have also been asked to spread awareness among visitors regarding monsoon safety measures and weather-related restrictions.
Fishermen warned against venturing into the sea
The IMD has issued a stern warning to fishermen operating along the Karnataka coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea until June 9 due to expected squally weather conditions.
Meteorologists have predicted strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph along the coastline. Such conditions can make fishing operations hazardous and increase the risk of accidents at sea.
Fishermen already at sea have been advised to return to shore at the earliest, while harbour authorities are monitoring developments closely. The warning forms part of broader precautionary measures being implemented across coastal Karnataka as the southwest monsoon gains strength.
Continued vigilance urged
With the southwest monsoon showing signs of intensifying further, authorities have urged residents of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to stay updated on official weather forecasts and follow safety advisories. While the rainfall has brought relief from heat and improved water availability, officials remain cautious about the potential for flooding, landslides and structural damage during periods of sustained heavy rain.
The coming days will be crucial as coastal Karnataka remains under weather alerts, with administration officials, disaster management teams and emergency services on standby to respond to any rain-related incidents.
