MANGALURU: A 17-year-old boy, Shailesh, died when a retaining wall collapsed on a house in Jokatte, on the outskirts of Mangaluru, following heavy rain on Thursday. Shailesh had been staying overnight at his cousin’s house, where his cousin Savita, her husband, and their children escaped unhurt.
Dakshina Kannada district continued to experience heavy rainfall, leading to damage to five houses, 286 electric poles, and five transformers within 24 hours. An orange alert has been issued in Kodagu, where heavy rain has damaged several houses and roads, prompting the district administration to declare a holiday for schools and PU colleges on Friday. A minor landslide was reported on Shanthalli Road, and the Kutta-Kerala interstate highway has been partially damaged with barricades placed at vulnerable spots.
In Udupi district, heavy rain resumed after a brief lull, causing damage to properties, electric poles, and uprooting trees. The CESC department reported that 2,096 electric poles and 46 transformers have been damaged so far, resulting in a loss of Rs 2.19 crore. Repair works on damaged power lines are ongoing.
