Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts were pummeled by intense but brief bursts of rain on Monday, leading to scattered damage and disruption.
Mangaluru city and its surrounding areas bore the brunt of the morning downpour. Rain continued through the evening in Puttur, Kadaba, Subramanya, and Bantwal.
Udupi district saw relentless rain in Kundapur, Byndoor, and Karkala taluks, while Udupi city, Manipal, and Malpe received intermittent showers.
The heavy rains caused damage to houses. Lightning strikes also caused havoc. In Bajpe, Chandrahasa Shetty’s house suffered damage to a cow shed after a tree fell on it. Keshava’s house in Badagulipadi under Ganjimath gram panchayat limits sustained severe damage from a lightning strike.
Beltangady witnessed widespread destruction, particularly in Mulikaru of Dharmasthala village. High winds uprooted over 50 arecanut trees belonging to Perna Malekudiya and ripped tiles off his house. Locals came together to offer temporary repairs. Additionally, Shankara’s house and farm also suffered damage.
The national highway near Somanthadka in Mundaje village became flooded, causing traffic disruptions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the coastal region on Tuesday and Wednesday. With wind speeds reaching 45-55 kmph predicted, fishermen have been advised to stay ashore for their safety.
