Over the weekend, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts experienced heavy rainfall, leading to various incidents and disruptions across the region. In Dakshina Kannada, a tree fell on a car at Golikatte along the Kodaje-Anantadi road, causing damage to the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the incident affected vehicular traffic due to slippery conditions on the Kashibettu highway.
Mangaluru city faced incessant rainfall throughout the morning, tapering off later in the afternoon. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for coastal districts from July 7 to 9, warning of further heavy rainfall.
In Udupi district, continuous downpours submerged low-lying areas in Karkala, Hebri, and Udupi town. Although the intensity of rain decreased later, the aftermath included disruptions in electricity supply.
Meanwhile, sea erosion escalated at Maravanthe, particularly affecting the retainer wall near Bobbarya Daiva Stana on the road to Maravanthe outer port. High-velocity waves washed away rocks from the wall, raising concerns of potential collapse that could threaten the road infrastructure. Similar issues were observed during Cyclone Tauktae three years ago.
Local authorities and residents remain vigilant amid the ongoing challenges posed by severe weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and safety measures.
