Various parts of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts experienced heavy rains in short bursts on Monday, leading to several incidents of minor damage and destruction.
Mangaluru city and its surrounding rural areas were hit by intense rains on Monday morning, while Puttur, Kadaba, Subramanya, and Bantwal saw significant rainfall both in the morning and evening. In Udupi district, Kundapur, Byndoor, and Karkala taluks faced continuous downpours, with Udupi city, Manipal, and Malpe receiving intermittent showers. Houses belonging to Baikady Fayaz and Laxmi Marakala in Brahmavara taluk were damaged.
Mescom reported a loss of Rs 25.72 lakh due to the destruction of electricity poles and transmission wires, causing power disruptions for several hours in Udupi district. In total, 151 electricity poles, 3.13 km of wire, and 20 transformers were damaged.
In Bajpe, a tree fell on Chandrahasa Shetty’s house, damaging the cow shed. In Ganjimath, lightning struck Keshava’s house in Badagulipadi, causing severe damage. Beltangady reported widespread destruction in Mulikaru of Dharmasthala village, where over 50 arecanut trees were uprooted due to high winds, and tiles were blown off Perna Malekudiya’s house. Locals temporarily repaired the damage. Shankara’s house and farm were also affected, and the national highway was inundated at Somanthadka in Mundaje village.
The IMD has declared a red alert for Tuesday and Wednesday in the coastal region. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to the possibility of winds blowing at speeds of 45 to 55 km per hour.
