Bantwal: Strong winds accompanied by thunderstorms swept through Punjalkatte and surrounding areas on Friday evening, October 9, uprooting trees, damaging houses and disrupting electricity supply. The sudden spell of severe weather caused property damage in several locations, including Punjalkatte and Puriya, leaving residents concerned about the impact of the changing weather.
A tree fell on an unoccupied house belonging to the late Ranjan in Puriya, while the sheet-metal roof of a nearby cashew factory was blown away by the strong winds. A local rubber estate also suffered losses after several rubber trees were uprooted.
Trees uprooted and property damaged
The strong winds brought down tree branches in several parts of Punjalkatte and Puriya. The damage affected residential properties, commercial premises and agricultural land.
In Puriya, a tree crashed onto the unoccupied house of the late Ranjan. Although the incident caused concern among local residents, the house was reportedly unoccupied at the time.
The sheet roof of a nearby cashew factory was also blown away by the fierce winds. The damage highlighted the vulnerability of buildings with lightweight roofing during sudden spells of severe weather.
A local rubber estate suffered losses as numerous rubber trees were uprooted. Several arecanut trees were also reported to have been damaged across the region.
The extent of the overall damage was not immediately quantified, but the incidents affected multiple properties and plantations in the area.
Roads blocked, traffic disrupted
Fallen trees and broken branches obstructed roads at several locations, disrupting traffic and making movement difficult for motorists.
Local residents faced difficulties as branches and other debris blocked stretches of road. Such obstructions can pose risks to road users, particularly during periods of poor visibility and continuing rainfall.
The disruption also highlighted the need to clear fallen branches and damaged trees promptly to restore normal traffic movement and reduce the risk of further incidents.
Power supply disrupted after trees fall on electric lines
Electricity supply was interrupted in parts of the region after fallen branches damaged power lines. The strong winds brought down branches onto electric wires, snapping lines and affecting the local power supply.
Power disruptions added to the difficulties faced by residents following the storm. Restoration efforts would require damaged lines and affected sections of the electricity network to be checked and repaired.
Residents are advised to keep away from fallen electrical wires and report damaged lines to the concerned authorities rather than attempting to handle them themselves.
KPS School roof tiles damaged
The strong winds also affected the primary section of KPS School in Punjalkatte, blowing off roof tiles.
The incident added to the list of property damage reported in the area. School buildings and other public facilities can be particularly vulnerable when strong gusts affect roofing materials and exposed structures.
The damage at the school, along with the impact on houses, the cashew factory and plantations, reflected the widespread nature of the weather-related disruption.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain cause concern
The region had experienced evening showers accompanied by thunder and lightning over the preceding few days. Friday evening brought a sudden spell of strong winds, heavy rain and loud thunder in Bantwal, BC Road and neighbouring areas.
The abrupt change in weather caused anxiety among residents, particularly after trees were uprooted and electricity lines damaged.
The incidents underline the importance of taking precautions during thunderstorms and strong winds, including avoiding shelter under trees, staying away from unstable structures and keeping clear of damaged power lines.
The full extent of the losses caused by the winds in Punjalkatte and surrounding areas was not immediately available. Residents will be watching for further weather developments as the area recovers from the damage.
