Despite recent challenges in the technology and software engineering sectors, interest in IT and related fields remains strong among students seeking admission to engineering colleges in Karnataka’s coastal districts. Colleges report an increased demand for IT programs, with all management seats filled.

Rio D’Souza, principal of St Joseph Engineering College in Vamanjoor, noted that the hiring slowdown has not deterred parents from enrolling their children in IT courses. He mentioned a slight resurgence in the mechanical engineering course, which had previously seen a decline.

Vivek Alva, managing trustee of Alva’s Education Foundation, confirmed that despite counseling candidates about the current hiring trends in the IT sector, the demand for IT courses remains high. He observed that IT companies are now focusing on niche hiring, seeking highly skilled engineers ready to start work immediately, rather than engaging in mass hiring.

Rashmi Bhandary, dean of placement at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management in Adyar, echoed this sentiment. She highlighted the renewed interest in mechanical engineering and noted that IT companies now only hire top candidates, leaving many average students without placements. Bhandary observed that many parents seeking admissions for their children are not from engineering backgrounds and are often unaware of current industry trends.

Overall, the persistent demand for IT and related courses, despite the industry’s hiring challenges, indicates a strong belief among students and parents in the sector’s long-term potential.
