On Thursday, May 30, members of the Highway Protest Committee submitted an appeal, urging for reduced charges at the Shiroor toll gate specifically for locals.
During a meeting attended by the DC, local representatives, and toll gate officials, it was agreed upon to provide toll charge rebates for vehicles within a five-kilometer radius of the Shiroor toll gate. However, concerns were raised as toll gate staff were insisting on monthly passes for local vehicles, prompting the submission of the appeal.
The committee highlighted issues regarding the impending monsoon and the lack of precautionary measures by the company responsible for highway maintenance. Last year’s incidents of rainwater entering paddy fields and houses adjacent to the highway raised alarm. Additionally, the increasing accidents due to waterlogging demand urgent attention.
Furthermore, demands were made for streetlights, service roads, signboards, a bus stand, and employment opportunities for locals in the Bappanabailu area. The committee emphasized the importance of courteous behavior from toll staff towards the public.
Toll manager Rajan Nair accepted the appeal, with prominent personalities of Shiroor and representatives from various organizations present. A one-month timeframe was set for addressing the public’s demands.
