Police have registered a case against Hindu Jagaran Vedike leader Samit Raj on charges of sexual assault and criminal intimidation, following a complaint filed by a woman who alleged that he harassed and threatened her over the past two weeks.
Case registered at Bajpe police station
The FIR was lodged at Bajpe police station in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday after the victim submitted a detailed written complaint. Police confirmed that the case was filed based on prima facie evidence and statements provided by the complainant.
According to the complaint, Raj allegedly obtained the woman’s intimate photographs and used them to coerce her. She further alleged that he repeatedly assaulted her under threat of violence. When she resisted, Raj is said to have “threatened to kill” her.
Police investigation underway
“Based on the complaint and prima facie evidence, a case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the law. Investigation is underway,” a Bajpe police official said.
The police have invoked provisions of sexual assault and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code. However, the accused has not been arrested yet. Authorities stated that efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend him.
Pattern of harassment alleged
The complainant alleged that Raj had been harassing her for the past 15 days. She said that he misused personal photographs to blackmail her and subjected her to repeated abuse, causing her extreme mental trauma.
Police officials confirmed that her statement has been recorded and evidence is being verified as part of the investigation.
Awaiting further legal action
The case has drawn public attention given the accused’s association with a prominent socio-political outfit. Police sources said that once Raj is apprehended, he will be produced before the court and further custodial investigation will follow.
Authorities also indicated that the matter is being treated with seriousness, and strict action will be taken based on evidence gathered.
