Moodbidri: The Hosabettu Gram Panchayat has imposed a fine of Rs 1,500 on the owner of a tempo for illegally dumping garbage along a roadside, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining cleanliness and enforcing proper waste management practices in the village. The action was taken after panchayat officials detected the violation during a field inspection carried out as part of routine sanitation monitoring.
Illegal dumping detected during inspection
The incident came to light during a site inspection led by Hosabettu Gram Panchayat Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Savitha. Officials from the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat also participated in the inspection, which was organised to assess sanitation standards and ensure that waste management regulations were being followed across the gram panchayat limits.
During the inspection, the team found a tempo owner disposing of garbage illegally along a roadside instead of using an authorised waste collection or disposal facility. The act was considered a violation of the panchayat’s waste management rules and posed a threat to public hygiene and the surrounding environment.
Officials immediately intervened and initiated action against the vehicle owner. A penalty of Rs 1,500 was imposed on the spot, and the individual was warned against repeating the offence in the future.
Panchayat stresses responsible waste disposal
The Hosabettu Gram Panchayat reiterated that indiscriminate dumping of waste not only affects the appearance of public spaces but also creates health hazards, pollutes the environment and attracts stray animals and pests.
Officials appealed to residents, commercial establishments and vehicle owners to dispose of waste only at designated collection points and to follow the waste segregation and disposal guidelines issued by the local body. They emphasised that proper waste management is a shared responsibility that requires active public participation.
The panchayat also noted that regular inspections will continue to identify violations and ensure that sanitation standards are maintained across the village.
Warning against future violations
Officials warned that stricter action would be taken against anyone found violating waste management rules in the future. They stated that repeated offences could attract higher penalties and additional action under applicable local regulations.
The gram panchayat urged the public to cooperate with sanitation workers and local authorities by avoiding littering, preventing illegal dumping and encouraging responsible waste disposal practices within their neighbourhoods.
Authorities believe that consistent enforcement, combined with public awareness, will help improve cleanliness and protect the local environment.
Community extends support
Members of the village sanitation committee and local residents also participated in the inspection and extended their support to the gram panchayat’s cleanliness drive. Their cooperation, officials said, plays a vital role in identifying sanitation issues and promoting better waste management practices at the community level.
The gram panchayat expressed hope that such enforcement measures would serve as a deterrent to others and encourage greater civic responsibility among residents. It reiterated its commitment to keeping public spaces clean through regular monitoring, awareness campaigns and strict implementation of sanitation rules.
With cleanliness remaining a priority, the local body has appealed to everyone in the village to work together in maintaining a healthy and pollution-free environment by using authorised waste disposal facilities and reporting instances of illegal dumping to the authorities.
