Mangaluru: In a landmark achievement, the Department of Cardiology at Fr. Muller Medical College Hospital successfully performed a rare and innovative cardiac procedure, granting a new lease of life to a 69-year-old patient from Honnavara, Uttara Kannada.
The patient, who approached Dr. H. Prabhakar, Chief Interventional Cardiologist, on 23 April 2025, presented with acute chest pain and breathing difficulties. Clinical examinations revealed three calcium deposits severely obstructing his coronary artery. Complicating the situation further, the patient had undergone bypass surgery a decade ago, making a second bypass surgery extremely high risk.
Recognising the urgency, Dr. Prabhakar, along with Dr. Pradeep Pereira and Dr. Jostol Pinto, devised a meticulous treatment plan. They adopted a technologically advanced procedure known as “Orbital Atherectomy”, a first-time feat at the hospital.
Procedure Highlights
-
Orbital Atherectomy was employed to safely remove the calcified blockages in the artery, restoring smooth blood circulation.
Two stents were strategically placed to ensure long-term artery patency and prevent future complications.
The entire minimally invasive procedure lasted one and a half hours, and was executed with utmost precision and care.
Post-procedure, the patient responded remarkably well, making a full recovery and being discharged in stable condition on 26 April 2025.
Hospital’s Commitment to Innovation
Rev. Fr. Richard Coelho, Director of Fr. Muller Institutions, congratulated the cardiology team for this exceptional medical feat. He reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in healthcare, ensuring that patients receive world-class treatments.
This successful intervention not only highlights the hospital’s clinical excellence but also reinforces its standing as a leading institution in cutting-edge cardiac care.
