Mangaluru: The state government has released a grant of ₹165 crore for development works within the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) under Phase II of the Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana (MGNVP), according to MLC Ivan D’Souza.

Addressing a press conference at his office in the MCC building, Ivan D’Souza announced that the foundation stone-laying ceremony for multiple projects will be held on April 18, marking the formal launch of the next phase of urban infrastructure development in the city.

Key projects to be launched across the city

The foundation stones for several priority works will be laid by Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh. These include projects worth ₹3 crore near Maravoor bridge, ₹1.95 crore near Valencia Church, and ₹2 crore at Chilimbigudde. Additional development works are also planned in key areas such as Sunkadakatte and Urvastores.

Some of the approved works have already commenced within the Mangaluru City Corporation limits, indicating an accelerated implementation approach under the scheme.

The official programme on April 18 will also be attended by Dakshina Kannada District in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, along with other public representatives and officials.

Focus on road infrastructure and urban improvement

Highlighting the scope of the initiative, Ivan D’Souza stated that a total of 25 development works have been taken up under this phase. A significant portion of the projects focuses on improving road infrastructure across the city.

Key road works include concreting at Bolara Seaface in front of the waterfront promenade, K.N. Board Yard Road, Lobo River Road, TVS Factory Road, Canara Plywood Road, and several internal roads in the 60th Bengre ward. These road development projects alone are estimated to cost around ₹5 crore.

Officials believe that these upgrades will enhance connectivity, improve commuting conditions, and support the overall urban growth of Mangaluru, which has been witnessing steady expansion in recent years.

Boost to civic infrastructure under MGNVP

The Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana is a state initiative aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure in cities and towns through targeted investments. Phase II of the programme focuses on addressing critical gaps in civic amenities such as roads, drainage systems, and public spaces.

The ₹165 crore allocation to Mangaluru is expected to significantly improve infrastructure within MCC limits, benefiting residents across multiple wards. Authorities have emphasised that the funds will be utilised for priority works that directly impact public convenience and urban mobility.

Implementation and public expectations

With foundation stones set to be laid and some works already underway, expectations are high among residents for timely completion of the projects. Past experiences with delays in civic works have led to calls for stricter monitoring and accountability during execution.

Officials have assured that necessary steps will be taken to ensure quality standards and adherence to timelines. Coordination between departments and regular supervision are expected to play a key role in the successful implementation of the projects.

Conclusion

The release of ₹165 crore under Phase II of the Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana marks a significant push towards improving urban infrastructure in Mangaluru. With multiple projects spanning road development and civic upgrades, the initiative is poised to enhance the city’s overall livability.

As groundwork begins, the focus will now shift to efficient execution and timely delivery to ensure that the benefits of these investments reach the public without delay.
